'Fore' The Future
Golf and sustainability might not seem like an obvious pair, but there’s so much happening to make the game more eco-friendly. Every month, we’ll dive into some examples of how golf is embracing the environment and share how we’re applying those ideas to what we do at Stanners. It’s all about keeping the game we love sustainable—for the planet, the course, and future generations.
The John Deere Classic: Driving Sustainability in the Midwest
Dates: July 10th–13th
Location: TPC Deere Run, Illinois, USA.
A longstanding fixture on the PGA Tour, the John Deere Classic has quietly become a trailblazer in environmental best practices for major tournaments. Held annually at TPC Deere Run, the event has steadily incorporated sustainability into its operations, aligning with John Deere’s broader corporate commitment to land stewardship and responsible resource management.
This year’s tournament continues its push for innovation, with all on-course transportation powered by electric and hybrid vehicles from John Deere’s evolving sustainable fleet. Food and beverage service will focus on locally sourced produce and compostable packaging, with a comprehensive waste sorting system deployed throughout the venue. Additionally, the Classic is working with the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program to ensure ongoing biodiversity conservation and pollinator protection across the property. This mix of high-level golf and conscious operations highlights how established events can meaningfully adapt to meet environmental standards while enhancing the spectator and player experience.
Webinar: Golf and the Circular Economy – A New Material Future
Date: July 16th
Host: Sustainable Golf Innovation Network
As the conversation around sustainability matures, July’s standout educational event tackles a crucial topic: materials. Hosted by the Sustainable Golf Innovation Network, this webinar explores how circular economy principles can transform the supply chains that power golf, from apparel and equipment to course infrastructure.
Experts from across the industry, including sustainable textile researchers and equipment designers, will share case studies on the reuse, repurposing, and recycling of materials at scale. Key sessions include how recycled polymers are being used in tee markers, signage, and even bunker liners, as well as a dive into biodegradable alternatives for common course consumables. With consumer demand for eco-friendly golf gear increasing, this conversation underscores the importance of rethinking what sustainability looks like not just on the course, but in every product the sport consumes.
ISPS Handa World Invitational: Equality, Inclusion, and Eco-Conscious Competition
Dates: July 25th–28th
Location: Galgorm Castle & Castlerock Golf Clubs, Northern Ireland
Unique in format and forward-thinking in ethos, the ISPS Handa World Invitational continues to lead the way in championing both equality and environmental awareness. This tri-sanctioned event (LPGA, LET, and DP World Tour) features men and women competing on equal footing, making it a global symbol of inclusion. But it’s also gaining attention for its ongoing sustainability initiatives.
In partnership with GEO Foundation, both host venues have committed to rigorous sustainability targets—implementing efficient irrigation systems, reducing single-use plastics, and using battery-powered maintenance equipment. The tournament also emphasises carbon reduction, offsetting emissions through tree planting and verified local carbon projects. For fans, there’s a strong community engagement programme that includes eco-education activities for children, waste reduction challenges, and plant-based food options. The ISPS Handa World Invitational continues to prove that the future of golf lies in balance, across gender, across ecosystems, and across generations.
At Stanners Golf, these global efforts to integrate environmental care into elite golf inspire us daily. They show us that sustainability is not a side project; it’s becoming part of the game’s very foundation. As we release our sustainable golf polo this summer, we’re proud to stand alongside those reimagining golf as a sport that thrives by giving back to the planet it plays on.
